Around 40% of products in Walmart is sold under their own brands, made for the company through partnership with many different manufacturers, such as Sam's Choice, Equate, Great Value and Smart Price. Each of them differ by products stocked and by area size: Discount Stores carry general merchandise, Neighbourhood Markets carry groceries, pharmacy products and fuel Sam's Club Stores provide bulk sales of all kinds of goods, from consumables to valuables and finally, Supercenters are most similar to hypermarkets, offering a huge variety of products, amenities and fast food restaurants. This same fleet, as well as the company's extensive logistics network, was used to quickly iron out the losses caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which resulted in them donating $20 million and food for 100,000 meals, along with a promised job for every displaced Walmart worker.Īcross the U.S., Walmart operates in four formats: Discount, Supercenters, Neighbourhood Markets and Sam's Club Stores. By its' 25th anniversary in 1987, Wal-Mart had nearly 1,200 stores with 200,000 employees enlisted and sales going into $16 billion same year as when it implemented a huge satellite network, allowing two-way voice and data communication between stores and one-way video communication with the main office in Bentonville. The chain was rapidly growing, with multiple stores opening both in Arkansas, and then outside of the state, leading to it being incorporated as Wal-Mart, Inc. The name partially came from Walton himself, and partially from FedMart (formerly a chain of discount department stores, now acquired by Target), since Walton really "liked Sol 's FedMart name".
